Is anyone watching Oprah?
It's freaking amazing!
More later...
Okay, so this guy was on. He's blind, but finds his way around using echolocation, which is "the ability of humans to sense objects in their environment by hearing echoes from those objects". And you know who else uses it? Dolphins. Amazing
In fact, I think it might be the most amazing thing I've heard of since "Synesthesia" the ability to see feelings and sounds as colours. (Apparently it's why Stevie Wonder is such a musical genius - he sees the music as colours and shapes and fits them together to make beautiful music.)

I'm very excited to read this!! Remember when someone asked us for our favourite words and everyone said, like, "chocolate" and stuff, and I said "echolocation" and you called me a nerd?
Hee hee, I haven't forgotten.
But it's my favourite word. And now you're blogging about it and Oprah's talking about it. Woo hooooo!

Yes! I do remember! I'm fairly confident you didn't say "clicking like dolphins" in your explanation. And you're still a nerd. :)

I was obsessed with Synaesthesia for a little while and now I'm super-excited to find out that Stevie Wonder has it. Have you read Astonishing Splashes of Colour by Claire Morrall?
Echolocation is a good word but my favourite word is Hemicorporectomy. Not because of what is means which is very unpleasant but the because of the way it sounds. I also love the word Abysmal for the same reason.

'hemicorporectomy' is good, but you can't beat 'echolocation' for lovely-sounding, in my opinion.
Nope, I didn't mention dolphins. I mentioned bats. They do it to. Who'da thought dolphins and bats had anything in common? My world view has changed today and for that I thank you. :)
Yep. Still a nerd.

Stella, I read Astonishing Splashes of Colour when it first came out because it was about synaesthesia. I think I was a bit disappointed. Did you like it?
(Maybe I should use it in a YA book...)

I remember being disappointed that it wasn't more about synaesthesia. I felt it could have been explored in greater (and more interesting) detail. The woman frustrated me, it was a bit like watching Ferris Bueller with Cameron's Dad's car- you just knew that it was all going to end badly and someone was going to have to face the music for recklessness. I think.
