This was my first time reading a Cate Carlisle book, so I’ll explain a little for any other readers not familiar with the series. Cate is 16 and seems to manage to get herself involved with various dangerous adventures! This has made her a great asset to IMIA, the International Maritime Investigation agency, described in the book as a ‘shadowy’ group of investigators that don’t appear on governmental lists! (Yes, that adds to the mystery doesn’t it?) Cate has been involved in some cases for IMIA and also often calls on the help of her younger brother, Arthur, who’s brilliant at hacking into all kinds of computer databases.
OK, so in Viper’s Nest, Cate decides to go on holiday and visit her mother in Los Angeles... but as you can guess, this doesn’t quite work out to plan.
With her mother delayed, Cate finds herself staying in a hotel. She meets Richie who turns out to be friends with her mutual friends, twins Amber and Jade who live in the area. Except... they’ve gone missing on an archeological dig in Mexico. They know the twins found something valuable so they suspect this is why they are missing...
Cate and Richie plan to find out what has happened to them... except there are a number of people involved in this that would do anything to protect their secrets. But with the twins in danger, Cate is determined to stop at nothing to find them...
Definitely a book for adventure fans. I really liked the characters and the storyline was good. It certainly takes you on a journey to the US and Mexico!
