Miranda’s mother summons her to spend the summer on Selkie Island, to help clear up the summer house belonging to Miranda’s late grandmother. It’s Miranda’s first time on the island as her mother and grandmother had long ago fallen out. Selkie Island, it turns out, is shrouded in mystery, including old tales which include stories of some local inhabitants being merfolk.
Miranda soon finds out the island is geographically and socially divided between the summer visitors and the all-year-round locals. She quickly makes friends with some of the summer visitors, a group of girls. However, their love of shopping, dressing up, planning time with ‘eligible’ visiting boys aren’t things Miranda has a lot of time for. Her world is usually one of order, study and being herself. It’s not long before the mysteries of the island and the locals draw her in and she finds it impossible to resist befriending one of them...
Read more to follow Miranda’s summer and find out if she manages to clean up the house with her mum or decides to seek adventure on the island, finding out if the old tales are true.
Really great read from start to finish. Loved the mysterious build up that stays with you after you have finished the book. Well-written, perfectly paced, interesting plot that leaves you to come up with some of your own ideas whilst waiting for the sequel. There is also a great Q&A with the author in the back of the book.
