Review by Aisha Otiti.
The novel starts on an eerie and dark note (which is the undercurrent for later parts of the book) with the kidnap of the main character Lissy, who at that point of the book is only a few weeks old. The reader is told about this through the eyes of Lissy’s five-year-old brother Rafe, and his account is chilling. The rest of the novel is told through many characters' points of view and describes baby Lissy’s return, which is shrouded in secrecy.
The story then moves on to when Lissy is 14, and that’s when things start to get more interesting, if that is possible... what can top being kidnapped mysteriously as an infant?! Well, Lissy finds out that an old magical bargain could harm everything and everyone she cares about. There is just one catch, though – it can’t be broken.
The novel as a whole is thrilling and scary. It deals with ‘the other’ and ‘the unknown’, The Hidden, who are ancient Elven people and are deeply interested in Lissy.
Although I felt for Lissy, her situation and what came with it, she isn’t my favourite character.
I preferred her brother Rafe’s character, as despite all his complicated opinions of Lissy and their issues as brother and sister, he risks his life over and over again for her. That is what I found most endearing about the book.
Fans of old magic stories, fairytales and the supernatural will love this book, and it doesn’t disappoint.
