The world is torn. Mankind is riddled with mistrust and betrayal, struggling back from the brink of a terrifying apocalypse, and ruled over by the merciless council. The orphanages are filling with the children of destroyed enemies, and nowhere is safe, nobody is to be trusted.
Welcome to the world of Elspeth Gordie. Terrified that her strange yet empowering abilities will be discovered, she tries desperately to remain unnoticed. But she can’t stay hidden forever, and will soon have to face the long journey to the notorious Obernewtyn, where, she is quickly sucked into a complex web of uncertainty and danger, and must discover the sinister secret of the mysterious ‘Doctor’, before it is too late.
I found this book really gripping, and was fascinated by the strange new world created within its pages; a world with a painful and violent history, yet exhibiting small, striking parallels with our own. I loved the characters within the book, and found them believable and likeable, allowing me to really get into the story, and share Elspeth’s despair and delight as she goes on her incredible journey of discovery.
I would recommend this book to any teen readers who enjoy fantasy novels, and I’ll definitely be reading the rest of the Obernewtyn chronicles; The Farseekers, Ashling, The Keeping Place, The Stone Key, and The Sending.
