‘A boy was found dead by the river this morning and lies in the crypt of your church.’ Once again Ignatius’ long chin dropped in surprise but he shut his mouth quickly. ‘Others, it seems, have disappeared. Maybe as many as ten or eleven.’
In Montacute there lives a young girl, an outsider; her name is Cecily, otherwise known as Cess. On the day of Cess’s birthday a boy is found dead, ‘his body blackened and blistered’. When the mysterious Sir of Montacute’s son, Drax Montacute, returns to town, everyone has almost forgotten about the death of the unknown boy. But soon things in Montacute deteriorate, especially when a local boy, Cess’s only friend, goes missing....
Soon Cess finds herself embroiled in a mystery and consumed by a plot to rid England of its Queen. Are they connected? And how is the sudden reappearance of Drax Montacute, a sinister man, connected to these plans for evil? Life for Cess is about to change...
Lucy Jago has crafted a brilliant novel - full of dynamic characters and fantastic, devilishly good plot line. I really enjoyed reading this book, and found it hard to put it down - for anything!
I would highly recommend this book, to people who enjoy reading about murder and mystery, witchcraft, illegitimate children, and all set in a historical time!
