This is a new edition of a novel first published in 1999. It’s part of a series called ‘The Unexplained’, and the author has also written episodes of the Doctor Who TV show.
Matt has an interesting life for a teenager, he doesn’t go to school and travels the world helping his dad who is a professor with a lot of qualifications. Recently his dad became a paranormal investigator, and they've already, in previous books, solved some mysterious crimes.
In this novel Matt and his father go on what is planned as an educational holiday to Egypt but it's not long before that pulled into a local mystery. British secret agents that they've worked with before warn them about what is happening: An upcoming Tutankhamen exhibition appears to have awakened the ancient curse of the Pharaohs! Some local terrorists appear involved and are causing some turmoil - so much for Egypt being a good place for tourists to go. So can Matt and Professor Stirling find out what's going on?
This is an entertaining novel. Some elements of the plot didn't work for me but others did. I also wasn’t sure why the intelligent father is not really helpful in solving the mystery – Matt pretty much does that alone and also sometimes sounds too grown up for his age. Still, this is a solid read that brings a lot together. It isn’t a huge book (112 pages), so perfect also for readers that aren’t into lengthy 300 page reads!
