It's the start of a new term at the exclusive boarding school that Heidi attends because her parents work there. Heidi's looking forward to seeing her friends again, both at school and at her Saturday job at the local cake shop where she's been working all summer. But suddenly her friends have all found love and paired off, leaving Heidi to dream up a fantasy boyfriend, Gingerbread Ed. Ed is perfect in every way, except for the fact that he only exists in the online form Heidi herself created. (Unless you count the biscuit.) In fact, he's so perfect that most of her friends love him too, and soon they start messaging him with their deepest secrets...
Girl Meets Cake is 100% my kind of book. All I can say is that I loved it. No, I can say I love-love-loved it. Ah, maybe I can say a bit more...
The characters in this book are all gorgeously lovable in different ways. The locations - especially the cake shop - are quirky and original. The school's eighties musical production of Twelfth Night is inspired and utterly hilarious. The linguistic tricks are as brilliant as those in Susie Day's first book, Big Woo!, if not more so - the book is full of messaging sessions with friends, scripted dialogue between Heidi and a fictional TV detective and laugh-out-loud recipes. I love the way Heidi's mind works and the way it comes across on the page. This book is thoroughly entertaining, touching and funny.
And now I feel obliged to make a biscuit/cake pun, but I promise it's just a little one: Girl Meets Cake is truly yum from start to finish.
To quote Heidi herself: "EX. SELL. LENT."

That sounds like such a cute book!
