This recently published novel is quite a delight. It covers the journey of Sim, Blake and Kenny as they start out on a mission to give their friend, Ross the funeral they feel he deserves, instead of the one he got which included people who had treated him badly.
The three boys are wonderful characters, and even though Kenny constantly frets about how his mum is going to kill him for doing this, they keep on going towards their goal: taking Ross (or his ashes) to Ross, in Scotland.
Along the way the boys have some interesting experiences with a variety of people, which are great fun to read. The problem is, one of them loses a bag and they run out of money. So will they make it? And will revelations about Ross affect how they view the friendships they all had together?
Ostrich boys mixes adventure with the intricacies of teenage friendships – and I won’t give it away – but the ending is realistic and wonderful rather than predictable and expected. By the last chapter you have a real sense of how the three boys grow, what they have learnt and you feel rather proud of them.
Check out the author’s website to see how he’d rather be a rock star and wasn’t that good at English at school.
Chicklish will bring you more Keith Gray reviews later this year and we are pleased to announce that we will also be interviewing the author next week. So if you want to know which of his fantastic characters in Ostrich Boys he identifies with most, watch out for it!
