In this new series, Kumari is a goddess-in-training, destined to stay young forever and longing for a bit of excitement - of the right sort. She doesn't expect to be kidnapped when she goes to the Holy Mountain to bring her mother back from the dead, and she certainly doesn't expect to end up in New York City and labelled "Manhattan Mystery Girl" by the press.
Together with her pet vulture Badmash, Kumari escapes her kidnappers and settles into a family led by the wonderful Ma. She learns all about her new world from watching television, and she starts to attend the local high school. These were my favourite parts of the book, and I loved her new schoolfriends and the gorgeous Chico. Kumari has an effect on her classmates that's similar to Jerry Spinelli's Stargirl. At the same time as coping with mundane life in the World Beyond, Kumari is starting to unravel some of the less down-to-earth mysteries of her life.
The book is an original mix of fantasy and reality, and Kumari is a sweet, unusual and trend-setting new character.
