I haven't actually read Prep, but I'll definitely get around to it soon since it's been highly recommended. It's actually being reissued by a new publisher, following the enormous success of Curtis Sittenfeld's latest novel, American Wife.
The original cover is the one on the left. The new cover is on the right. I know there's been debate about whether or not it's YA and the new cover looks more "teen" than the original to me. What do you think? And which cover do you prefer?

Strangely enough - even though I don't know what the book is about - and you know my personal loathing of covers with 'people' on - but I prefer the b/w photo one. Think it's because it doesn't scream 'look at how skinny and glamorous I am!' and I love b/w photos. it's just lovely. What's the belt all about in the other one?

It's such a pretty photo, though, isn't it.
I *think* the belt is something to do with prep school colours. I think part of the problem in the UK was that it didn't mean anything to UK readers.

I like the old one, I think the colours look fresh and inviting (or something) although the new one matches the marketing of American Wife, so that makes sense.
But having read the book, I'm not sure it quite suits the character, who is supposed to be very awkward and plain and rather depressed. The girl in the pic looks generically pretty and hopeful and Gossip Girl-ish. Which should sell, I guess!

I agree with Diane and prefer the old version. I have just finished the book (Loved it!!) and think this is one book that you could do without seeing what the main character looks like.

That's a good point, Helen. Have you read The Man of Her Dreams, btw? I recommend it. I actually liked it a bit better than Prep. Is not quite as all-consuming an experience, but is a bit happier, I think.
