I first heard about this book at least year's Edinburgh Book Festival. Jenny Colgan talked about the difficulty of making the main character sympathetic and read a pant-wettingly funny extract that made me want to sit down immediately with the rest of the book.
It is some indication of the size of my 'to be read' pile that I only just managed to do so, but it was well worth waiting for.
Diamonds are a Girl's Best Friend follows the fortunes of 'It girl' Sophie Chesterton when her fortunes, well, disappear.
Sophie is forced from the high life and into reality with a resounding bump. She has to share a grotty flat with four boys on the Old Kent Road and scrapes a living as an assistant to a 'glamour' photographer. Along the way, she discovers truths about her old so-called friends, her family and herself.
Colgan's riches-to-rags story is milked for humour all the way and, whatever her concern while writing the book, she manages to make a spoiled, daddy's girl into a sympathetic and likeable heroine.
Diamonds are a Girl's Best Friend is my first Jenny Colgan, but it won't be my last.

Love this book. You should try West End Girls if you like this!

I adore Jenny Colgan, Talking to Addison and Amanda's wedding are absolutely brilliant, and if you grew up in the 80's with brat pack films you will love Looking for Andrew Mcarthy
