The Kinsella Sisters has a lot going for it – not least a fabulous endorsement from the queen of Chick Lit Marian Keyes.
With that recommendation on board, I settled down for a good read and I’m glad to say that Kate Thompson does not disappoint.
The book is a nicely paced tale of two sister Rio and Dervla, reunited when their father dies after a 20 year estrangement (you just know a man is involved, don’t you?).
But thrown together, and realising how much they have missed over the years, the sisters soon find their lives thrown into turmoil with the discovery of a huge family secret.
You are left immediately wondering if the fragile relationship can survive another such blow and what will happen to the sisters.
I have to say I immediately warmed to bohemian Rio not named after the Duran Duran song, just so you know) and also to the gorgeous location of Lissamore. Anyone who has visited the west coast of Ireland – with it’s sandy shores and stunning scenery will feel at home in this magical village. Bord Failte (the Irish tourist board) should have this woman on a commission!
But it is the real human story which makes this book so readable. It’s about real issues – friendship, families, empty nest syndrome – and that is what makes you keep turning the pages. There is layer upon layer of twists, turns and real life drama in almost every page.
Like a deliciously warm and cosy soap opera, The Kinsella Sisters leaves you wanting more and longing to up sticks and move to Lissamore yourself.
