You know when you just want to sit down with a cup of tea and a packet of biscuits and a really engrossing and entertaining book?
I'm in a bit of a reading slump at the moment. I've started a lot of books that were o-kay, but they just weren't grabbing me. So what do I do?
I pick up one of my tried and tested comfort reads, that's what I do. Top 5 over the cut.
1. The Princess Diaries series by Meg Cabot: I've already written about them, so I won't repeat myself ... except to say that they're funny, sweet and set in New York (I do find that when I want comfort, I want a book set in New York). Read with a coffee and a muffin.
2. The Tales of the City series by Armistead Maupin: No, the city isn't New York; it's San Francisco, which is almost as good. I've read these books countless times and I always get completely involved with the characters. Read with a bottle of wine and a joint (but don't say I told you to).
3. The Malory Towers series by Enid Blyton: I didn't realise I took so much comfort from series! I suppose it makes sense since then, if my slump continues, I've got yet more books to read. Read with ginger beer and homemade cake.
4. Notes from a Small Island by Bill Bryson: There you go! Not a series, not even fiction, but my absolute go-to book if I need a good laugh. Read with a pint of lager and a pie.
5. Any Elizabeth Berg book: Seriously, just pick one depending on your mood. I love Elizabeth Berg's books. They're so simple, but so entertaining and filled with wisdom and emotion. Read with a cup of camomile tea and some shortbread.

*Any Elizabeth Berg book:*
I'm like that with Lisa Jewell, me.
